Horse Care

The competition tasks of this skill category are based on the Vocational qualification in Horse Care and Management. The qualification titles of the basic qualification are Groom, Equestrian Services Instructor (from 2021) and Riding Instructor.

Description of the skill category

The competition tasks are based on the requirements of the vocational qualification in horse care and management (2018). The tasks are based on study units of Horse care and welfare, Stable and yard maintenance, Riding and harness racing and entrepreneurship in equine industry. Skill requirements are in the level “excellent” of the assessment scale.

Grooms can work as independent employees or entrepreneurs in a trotting stable, a riding stable, a breeding stable or an enterprise that provides equestrian services.

Equestrian services instructors or riding instructors can work as independent employees or entrepreneurs in a riding stable, a breeding stable or an enterprise that provides equestrian services. Equestrian services instructors provide guidance to customers in activities according to their area of specialisation and teach them horsemanship skills. Riding instructors teach riding and horsemanship skills.

Competition is individual.

Skill requirements

Successful competitor knows how to maintenance horse welfare in different circumstances. For instance, daily care, horse sports and hoof care. Competitor knows the species-specific behavior and the basic needs of horses and can avail the information individually for each horse. 

In addition to horsemanship skills, good skills with entrepreneurship and customer service are needed. The competitor is responsible, personally initiative and cost-conscious with competence for sustainable development.  

It is required to know how to use Social Media to create positive image about the horse management and oneself as a professional groom. 

Competitor plans his/her own work and comply with occupational safety. 

He/she understands the importance of one’s own physical and mental well-being and working ability in operation of equestrian enterprise.
